Heard a small bang in my computer room yesterday afternoon and went in to find that the computer I use as a server had died and I had no internet access (panic!).

Took it apart and figured out that the power supply had blown so (praying that was all it was) I tripped down to PC World to get a new one. £26.97 and half an hour later I was up and running again. Now what I want to know is what happens when I get to Lewis and something blows up? Can’t order online with no internet access but I guess there must be a computer shop in Stornoway? What if it happens on a Sunday?

Guess I’ll be bringing a few spares with me!

  1. There are computershops in Stornoway, but you’d be stuck on a Sunday. Whether they’d actually have the required component in stock in the first place is not a certainty. You’d have to order it - on-line…

  2. Well, ordering will be easy, just ask to use a friendly neighbours ‘puter to order on line, obviously being part of a small close knit community that wouldnt be a problem, unlike the big smoke, medium smoke, or little smoke. As for Sunday, well, you’ll survive, its only a day….unless of course you are telling us you have a ‘puter addiction, that however is another matter.
Another point, did you not say you weren’t a ‘puter expert? Fixing fings wat go bang I’m sure qualifies you for puter expert Brownie badge:)
Another another point, can you explain the countdown counter? ta

  3. like guido says there is computer shops - i went in and asked for an ethernet cable and was met with a blank stare and had to show them what one was - hope this helps ;0)

  4. Ellie, the Sunday remark was tongue in cheek. I am more than happy to not be able to do anything on a Sunday, after all that was what it was like when I was growing up and I see nothing wrong with having a day apart from all others. I’m not going to be a moaning incomer who wants to change the way of life. The way of life is the reason for moving there.

Definitely got a ‘puter addiction but I reckon the Western Isles will be the ultimate rehab. Might even manage a day without switching it on!

Not sure what you mean about the countdown timer. Do you mean what’s it for or do you mean how does it work?

  5. Les, likewise, was my comment, lol. (but not about the neighbours, ahh the bliss of normal neighbours) As for swtichin it off for a day, eh???, they cant make me do that, can they? Please say they cant, please. Ahh Computer addiction, well that’ll be the cat oota the bag on that one. Sorry I will seek out a self help group forthwith, hehehe.
AS for the counter, the question is what’s it for, to use a weegieism re how does it work, ‘you took that too far’.
