Did a bit of housebreaking today!
I’m probably a bit unusual (weird if you like) but I can’t be bothered carrying around unimportant and unnecessary stuff so when I go out anywhere I take the absolutely minimum of stuff with me. How lady folk understand handbags I’ll never know! So today I had to pick up my wife from work and after she had called I grabbed the keys to my company van - why would I need anything else? - and set off. Got outside, turned the ignition and the battery was completely flat. I noticed that the cassette player was still on from the last time I used it but - hey! - that was only six days ago!
Okay I thought, can’t get back in the house because I haven’t got the house keys (didn’t need them because my wife had hers). Can’t phone her because I didn’t bring the phone (I do have a mobile phone but hate it. The first mobile I bought came with £7.50 credit on it and that lasted three years!). Okay I’ll get the bus into town and meet her. Can’t do that because I haven’t got any money. No point in climbing over the garage because the back door is (unusually) locked. Looks like the only choice is the half hour walk into town to explain, hoping that she hasn’t caught a bus in the meantime.
Then I thought - hang on a minute, let’s try the window. We have a window at the front where you have to push the latch down really hard otherwise it pops up again, I have to do it as it needs too much effort for my wife. I reasoned that if it pops up on its own it might just do so with a bit of help. It was firmly down but with a grip on both sides of the frame it took just 30 seconds of vigorous wiggling and I was climbing through the window!
Now ours is a pretty safe neighbourhood with only one break-in we have heard of in 30 years but, even so, that’s a bit worrying! I guess tomorrow I’d better get some window locks. But then how the hell do I get in when it happens again? I can’t be bothered carrying around unimportant and unnecessary stuff!
